There's an old tale of a man who went to his teacher, a great Kabbalist, and confessed his terrible wrongdoings. The Kabbalist told him his actions were so horrendous, the only possible atonement would be an agonizing death caused by drinking mercury.
The man agreed and asked his master to administer the poison. The Kabbalist told him to lie on his back, close his eyes, and hold his mouth open. He poured a glass of liquid down the man's throat. The liquid, however, was nothing more than cold water.
The lesson for us today is that when we change ourselves to the point that we're willing to do whatever it takes to change - we won't have to. Facing our greatest fears - in this case the fear of death - banishes the negative traits that causes us to commit our misdeeds.
